…slow down, look around, and understand the ground on which one stands... a search for an architecture of nearness. The global landscape dominating the contemporary world is fast, sensational, and fleeting; a thin context from which a place-lessness has emerged. Conversely, the undercurrent of forces responsible for creating place[ness] imbues cultural histories, social structures, environmental evolutions, and human virtuosities. The unearthing of an architecture of place is bound to nearness, it is attentive to the local and aware of its presence. The work of Atelier Mey strives to embrace a slowness, taking time to experience the undercurrent of forces conspiring to create the character of a place, eroding at place-lessness. For us, architecture is found in the nearness of culture and craft, through the flow of energy through the environment, and the connection of people to place.
Atelier Mey was established with a steadfast commitment to exploring the field of architecture, driven by the goal of creating impactful buildings through connecting to the culture of place. Our practice prioritizes contemporary issues, including energy efficacy, materiality, craftsmanship in construction, contextual relevance, typology-- while prioritizing the social constructs of the built environment through a comprehensive design approach. We engage in an iterative design process that aims to enhance the human experience and improve the environments in which our projects are developed. Our work embodies a conscious, generative philosophy that is actively engaged with its context.
Based in Miami, Florida, we undertake projects throughout the Southeast Region and across the nation, ensuring our designs are sensitive to local place, climate, and culture. The firm embraces a diverse array of projects in various scales and sectors, including commercial spaces, institutional buildings, educational facilities, industrial sites, urban infill housing, and residential properties. In recognition of our dedication to connecting architecture with environmental stewardship, Atelier Mey was honored with the AIA Miami Small Firm of the Year Award in 2022, AIA Miami Sustainable Architects of the Year Award in 2021 and the AN Emerging Architect Best of Design Project 2025 Award. These accolades and other paralleling project honors and awards underscore our commitment to creating architecture that is both meaningful and impactful.
